Dana Elaine Owens, better than Queen Latifah the US, is a rapper and actress. in film, music and television, Queen Latifah has received 2 Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award and six additional Grammy nominations, and nods to her Emmy Award. Queen Latifah's parents were Lancelot and Rita Owens. They were both police officers. Rita was a Newark New Jersey teacher who worked at Irvington High School. The couple split when Latifah was ten years old. was ten years old. Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. At the age of 8, her cousin gave her the stage name Latifah, which means delicate and kind in Arabic. Latifah was who was 5'10" tall power forward for the team at her high school, was always a tall girl. The song she performed was "Home" from The Wiz during a play at her highschool. Latifah started beatboxing in the women's fresh rap group. Latifah was a part of the Flavor Unit's first group that included a number of MCs and producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King, created an audition for the hip-hop Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The recording was sent to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music signed Latifah upon hearing the track. Her first single, Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
